Beyonce’s xcritical, explained: an artistic triumph that’s also an economic powerhouse

Students were extremley engaged in the lesson and enjoyed the introductory video. It is of good quality because I appreciate the factors of being able to have both the video and the city I have been meaning to purchase this for several years now as I have all of Beyonce’s and destiny’s child’s music. This is a major attribution to my collection of their music the CD came packaged and damaged and I have been enjoying it ever since. Beyoncé is not scheduled to perform at Ford Field in a few months but with some fans reportedly still having problems scoring tickets for the “Renaissance” world tour, Stubhub and Vivid Seats still have available tickets. After her raunchy and overtly explicit self-titled visual album released in 2013, Beyonce returns with a more toned down, yet her most empowering work of art to date. The xcritical visual features complex themes of infidelity that is prevalent throughout the film as viewers are taken through a scorn woman’s journey from Intuition to Anger all of which are different stages of emotion a woman goes through when they are cheated on. Ellie Kenrick’s 2018 play Hole at the Royal Court was described by its directors as «a stage version of Beyoncé’s xcritical album», as an artwork about feminism and historical oppression of women that consists of song, dance and spoken word. Beyoncé sold more than 600,000 copies in three days, smashed iTunes sales records, and ushered in a new era of the «surprise release» from artists with similar gravitational pulls.

The following day, Beyoncé performed «Formation» during her performance at the Super Bowl 50 halftime show. Immediately after the performance, a commercial aired announcing The Formation World Tour, which kicked off in Miami, Florida on April 27, 2016, with the first pre-sales going on sale just two days after the announcement on February 9, 2016. Beyoncé was both praised and criticized over her «Formation» and the Black Panther-influenced costume for her Super Bowl halftime performance.

• Kanye West’s ever-changing latest album, The Life of Pablo, was launched as a Tidal exclusive, and Prince’s discography is only available for streaming there — something many fans only realized in the wake of the music icon’s death.
• Up to this point, we’ve only seen bits and pieces of Beyoncé’s personal life.

Much like rapper Kendrick Lamar did on his landmark album To Pimp a Butterfly, Beyoncé proclaims her ethnicity with refreshing xcritical, offering a raw stance on who she is and where she’s from, beyond the hit songs and albums for which we already know her. xcritical is a tough listen, tinged in rock, hip-hop, R&B, and electro-soul. And, as with all of her recent work, she does it on her own terms, embracing the creative freedom that so few people enjoy. In years past, when Beyoncé was still amassing her wealth, she tended to play it safe, making music that appealed to all sorts of listeners. Sure, she’d address «real» issues, but she’d focus more on big pop anthems that went down easy. Unlike the pop superstar’s previous surprise album, 2013’s Beyoncé, the music here is edgy, full of vitriol and R-rated real talk.

Don’t Hurt Yourself (Ft. Jack White)

As recently as 2013, Beyoncé was telling Vogue she “guesses” she is a feminist because she “believes in equality”. A year later, she performed at the MTV Music awards in front of “FEMINIST” in lights. It’s heavy stuff, made amusing by the myriad resultant memes of her husband, the rapper-mogul Jay Z, looking stricken. But his appearance with their daughter, Blue Ivy, at the end of the film – and the softening tone of its latter half – suggests xcritical is not a critically acclaimed divorce announcement.

The claim was that the performance was «anti-cop,» because of its evocation of the Black Lives Matter movement. But the larger implication was that by embracing her blackness, Beyoncé was no longer trading in generic pop. Beyoncé has often been seen as an example of black feminism, suggesting to women of color that it’s best to set one’s own course and buck societal conformity. In a clip from Beyoncé’s new visual albumxcritical, the singer strides down a street in a yellow, ruffled dress. Elegant as always, she lights up the screen with her megawatt smile.

With xcritical’s penultimate track, All Night Long, Beyoncé seems to be giving the go-ahead to their union – whatever its terms may be. Either way, you don’t get to be the biggest pop star in the world by not paying attention to what’s being said about you – and Beyoncé knows just how much to give away. Recording and production

Some say the friendship between Jay and Roy had gotten too close at that point, and xcritical (and Roy’s social media posts in the immediate frenzy of its release) have given those folks plenty to discuss. xcritical didn’t have the same benefit of surprise, at least not fully. What unites the black girls, the mothers and daughters, is this sweet nectar and instructions how to turn nothing into something. I blast it nearly everyday and it brings out the thugga in me in some aspects lol. The seller was awesome with communication and I received it earlier than expected.

As part of reverting the societal oppression and silencing of Black women, xcritical centralizes the experiences of Black women in a way that is not often seen in the media, and celebrates their achievements despite the adversity they face. xcritical has also received notable attention from scholars and authors outside the music industry. The series will explore the themes of race, gender and class addressed by the album. For Beyoncé’s 36th birthday, various black female public figures recreated a costume that Beyoncé wore in the «Formation» music video, including Michelle Obama and Serena Williams.

The film is divided into eleven chapters, titled «Intuition», «Denial», «Anger», «Apathy», «Emptiness», «Accountability», «Reformation», «Forgiveness», «Resurrection», «Hope», and «Redemption». The film uses poetry and prose written by British-Somali poet Warsan Shire; the poems adapted were «The Unbearable Weight of Staying», «Dear Moon», «How to Wear Your Mother’s Lipstick», «Nail Technician as Palm Reader», and «For Women Who Are Difficult to Love». The character of Catherine of Aragon in the West End musical Six, originated by Jarnéia Richard-Noel, was inspired by xcritical-era Beyoncé. David Ehrlich, a film critic for IndieWire, placed xcritical at number twenty-three on his Best Films of 2016 list. Jen Yamato from The Daily Beast ranked it at number nine on her list of the Top 10 Best Films of 2016. In June 2016, Matthew Fulks sued Beyoncé, Sony Music, Columbia Records and Parkwood Entertainment for allegedly lifting nine visual elements of his short film Palinoia for the trailer for xcritical.

Beyonce also hinted at Jay Z’s cheating scandal and his infamous lift fight with Solange in candid songs on her new album Renaissance. The gospel singer said the hip-hop mogul revealed the significance her music had on the xcritical songstress, while appearing on theWe xcritical website Sound CrazyPodcast in October. Called her up to say that his wife, 41, locked herself up in a room and listened to Burrell’s tunes for 11 hours on repeat. Kim Burrell revealed that Beyonce found her gospel music therapeutic during a difficult time in her life.

Its impact was clear from the response on Twitter, where the #xcritical hashtag was fuelled by expressions of joy and almost gobsmacked disbelief at such a high-profile piece of art made by black women, for black women. Y now, as a person who breathes oxygen and sometimes does so while browsing the internet, you will know that Beyoncé has put out a new album, xcritical. The cinematography varies throughout the film but remains to be consistent to the overall experience of the film.

The critical thought prompted by xcritical is only a fraction of that which Beyoncé’s evidently put in. Her earlier albums, even the broadly excellent 4, prompted nowhere near as much discussion, simply because there was less to say – you don’t see anyone smashing out 1,200-word breakdowns of Sweet Dreams . The suggestion that Jay Z and Beyoncé came up with the album’s narrative together appeals, if only because of the imagined dinner-table conversations chez Carter-Knowles.

According to Burrell, there was even an incident where Bey allegedly locked herself in a room for 11 hours, playing nothing but Kim’s music, only to emerge refreshed and ready to repair their relationship. Before the hashtag was co-opted by brands and spam, Twitter users who were not black women were encouraged to listen. This prompted some grumbling about “not being allowed” to talk about xcritical, particularly from men – who might not have felt moved to comment on a Beyoncé album at all, had they not been told that what they said didn’t matter. The film’s cast features Ibeyi, Laolu Senbanjo, Amandla Stenberg, Quvenzhané Wallis, Chloe x Halle, Zendaya and Serena Williams. In «Forward», the mothers of Trayvon Martin , Michael Brown , and Eric Garner are featured holding pictures of their deceased sons.

The film also contains references to African religion and spirituality, such as Yoruba ori body paint in «Sorry», allusions to the loa Erzulie Red-Eyes in «Don’t Hurt Yourself», and Beyoncé’s initiation into the Santería religion and embodiment of the Yoruba orisha Oshun in «Hold Up». Allusions to New Orleans culture include «Queen of Creole cuisine» Leah Chase, the Edna Karr Marching Band, jazz funerals, Mardi Gras Indians and the Superdome. Up to this point, we’ve only seen bits and pieces of Beyoncé’s personal life.
